"THE VODKA DEMO" BY EQUINOX!
Reviewed by Slayer from the Lightnings
Hi guys! here it is the last product from Equinox : The Vodka Demo!
For the lamers, Equinox was at the beginning a cra....g group, I saw
their first cra..s during the summer in 1988 or in 1989, I can't ex-
-actly remember.. But Equinox became a demo-crew about one year ago
and illegal, werewolf and the others joined either v-eight or the
fallen angels (at this time, equinox was a member of the empire)...
Around the end of the year 1990, the fallen angels ceized to exist
(sob,sob) and Illegal joined the Replicants.. Werewolf and the others
are still in the empire (as far as i know).
But why this demo is named like that?? Ehhhhh if you were at the recent
Trans Beauce II demo party you certainly know why!! (hey! will the disk
number one be released???? the party is know finished since four months!)
At this demo-party Equinox and Mcs did a drinking contest (but mcs won!)
More recently at Saint Quentin in France at the end of july there was
the second coding party of the black cats (but this time there was only
a very few groups : Tbc, Eqx, Clone, The Lightnings perhaps others but
it was our coder who was present at this coding party..) and equinox drank
alcohol as soon as they arrived their and at 11:00 pm went to a night
club and at 3:00 am started to code!! funny guys!..
Now we'll start with the review itself.. First of all, the screnn goes
black and you get a message saying 'Crack to Beat Dis!'... then the
presentation starts...
* THE PRESENTATION *
The music is an amiga soundtrack, and at the beginning each pseudonym of
Equinox members are displayed with various effects (scrollings, distor-
-tions..) and then you get some graphixx saying that these guys are from
the crew Equinox and that they bring you the Vodka Demo, then you get a
nice picture with a guy proudly showing a vodka bottle that he holds in
his hand..
* THE LOADER SCREEN *
The loader consists of 4 series of 10 tracking sprites moving all over the
screen (they look like the ones in the giga-tex screen of the life's a
bitch demo) and of a little scroller (8x8 font).. and of course there's
some soundchip music.This loading screen is nice but the colors aren't..
* THE MAIN MENU *
As I received the 'Ooh crickey wot a scorcher!!' by Tlb before this demo
I was disapointed by this main menu, there's no fullscreen, it's again
a sync-scrolling main-menu, you can only move in vertical/horizental di-
-rections... There's of course a scroller in the low border (32x32 font
and it's 16 colors). The graphixx are very nice, you can control the little
spaceship over the landscape using either the joystick or the cursor keys.
To enter a screen you have to shoot the logos of the screens by pressing
space or fire, there's a very big bug in this main menu : when you place
yourself below certain logos in order to see the last lines of them and
that you shoot, the main menu loads another screen!!! And finally the lo-
-ader screen and the main menu are not kept in memory on one meg sts!!
* COKE DEMO *
This screen consists of a 32x32 16 colours tera-mega-distorted scroller,
of an horizental starfield and of 10 little one colour tracking sprites
with a colour cycling on them. This screen is not original, but the
coding is good.
* ADDRESS SCREEN *
This screen consists of a 16 colours bouncing scroller, with a left/right
no border, and colourshocks above and below the scroller. I think the scr-
-oller is 64x64 but I'm not sure.. This screen is good on coding but not
on originality..
* RASTER MANIA *
This screen is in fact a plasma screen, there's no left and right border
Some Equinox and Vodka 8 colours logos and a one colour scrolltext, this
screen isn't nice because the colours on the plasma are only going from
white to a colour (yellow, blue..) to black.. it's sad because plasma
screens can be beautiful!..
* 3D FILLED VECTORS *
This is the 3d filled vectors screen of the demo it runs in one vbl and
the objects are really big! the 3d animation is smooth and fast. I per-
-sonnally prefer it to ziggy's and mcoder's tridi demo. There's no
starfield in the background or other stuff but the objects take almost
all the screen in size and it's really impressive, good 3d!
* HONGA ZLIKA *
This screen has an effect that i had never seen on st, there's some
cutted horizental rasters (they're not as large as the screen) moving
on a sinus wave it's really good.. there's also a 8x8 scroller with
pinky rasters on it, a colorshock line, nice equinox logos, and some
vodka demo sprites (a sprite for each letter). This screen is really
nice and original!
* DRAGON DEMO *
Some sprites in generated code! First you get a dragon moving on the
screen (like the space harrier one but the sprites are much bigger)
it's composed of ten sprites and the gfx are very good! Then some
text appears and moves as in the Mcoder/Starfires fullscreen, there's
also other sprites but the wave is too complex to be described....
This screen features one of the latest techniques for sprite coding,
sprites are usually boring but this screen is very nice.
* KILL THE BEAST *
This screen has a 2 plane parallax scroller, the first plane consists
of shadow of the beast 2 graphixx ripped by cyclone on amiga, and the
second (the background one) is some one colour graphixx and there's
some rasters in the background of it, there's also a scrolltext with
some rasters on it (one plane and 16x16 size..).. the gfx are very
nice and...... it's in fullscreen!!!! great screen!
* UNLIMITED BOBS *
These are some unlimited 8x8 sprites again but this time there's a
32x32 scroller bouncing up and down with some rasters on it, the
waves are very nice, i think the balls are the same that the ones in
the trans beauce 2 equinox screen, the music is an amiga soundtrack
and.. there's a counter for the number of sprites! they're the first
nes to manage it in asm (we managed it in gfa in october 90).. Nice
screen! i love the waves! and it's great to have included a counter.
* FLAGADA DEMO *
This demo has a nice Equinox logo....... but it has also two 3d vector
scrollers! The scrollers are turning in all the directions (imagine
the trans 2 equinox screen with a 3d scroller..). This screen is very
nice.
* RESET DEMO *
The reset demo consists of 3d vector objects and of a 8x8 scroller,
there's many objects.... as the filled vector demo the 3d is very fast
and smooth and the objects are large : nice reset demo!
* SURPRISE! *
This is Equinox vertical rasters!! i've seen 3 others vertical rasters
screen, one at the Trans Beauce 2 (on disk 1?), Vegetables ones for
Elite, and Manikin's ones.. These are the first ones in fullscreen, and
there's also a 64x64 scroller and a vodka sprite.. There's around 100
vertical rasters (i'm NOT sure of that) the rasters are moving as in the
vegetables ones and there's more than 16 colors on them, but for this
effect i prefer manikin's ones. My coder have seen them one month ago and
had said that they were really good and he was right!!
Well, now the conclusion.. some screens were very fastly reviewed and
i'm not sure of some details (width of scrollers, and lotsa other little
details..). First i was very disapointed by the main menu but the other
screens are all of very good quality. Equinox proved that they were still
one of the best groups in the st-scene and that they were not dead! Eqx.
done a big job on their synchro routs and tested their no border routs
on lots of sts and improved them in order they work on them, this is a
very good initiative and all the other demo groups should follow it coz
fullscreen is often a synonym of shifter problems. The things that disa-
-pointed me are the fact that the main menu (it has so many bugs) and the
loader aren't kept in memory on one meg sts and that the main menu has so
many bugs... anyway as i said the screens are very nice and you must get
this demo in your disk box! (but if you have a TT be sure that the demo
will not work properly!
